ROANOKE, Va. — Sheriff Antonio Hash has become the first sheriff in Virginia to introduce the nationally recognized (R) I.G.N.I.T.E. program at the Roanoke City detention center, a major step in preparing residents for life after incarceration.
The initiative — Residents Individually Growing Naturally and Intentionally through Education — offers expanded educational and reentry support, including a new re-entry pod and continued GED programs. Hash emphasized the importance of returning individuals to the community better equipped to succeed, not broken.
The launch event also featured a graduation for the Fresh Start Culinary Program and drew support from local leaders and sheriffs from Flint, Michigan and Charlotte, North Carolina. Hash continues to advocate for meaningful change, including referring to those in custody as residents and proposing a new name for the jail: the Roanoke City Justice Center.
